High cost, poor reliability, security vulnerability and electromagnetic pollution are some of the major concerns in item-level tagging and tracking of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). Although various industry giants have proposed a variety of solutions to rectify the inherent issues, many retailers still do not find it financially and ethically viable to tag individual items. Friendly Technologies aim to provide an innovative commercial solution, known as “Privacy Ensuring Affordable RFID System (PEARS)”. The advantage of this system is twofold: (a) tags are simpler and less expensive than conventional tags, and (b) security is inherently provided throughout a product’s lifecycle. The PEARS Feasibility project aims to investigate the commercial and technical viability of our novel system by developing business cases, determining the necessary technology capabilities and developing complex simulation models to investigate dynamic behaviours of FMCG.
The project has now been concluded successfully, and an executive summary with the findings can be viewed here.
